about

This song was inspired by an assignment set at school when I was 5. The class had to write a letter to someone who lived on the moon - either Spaceboy or Spacegirl. I chose Spacegirl.

Now that I'm 45, I've finally got round to turning it into a song. I had the idea about ten years ago but could never get the lyrics to quite work. Earlier this year the whole thing suddenly snapped into focus.

"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere" - Carl Sagan

lyrics

Verse 1

A rainy day on Earth again
And time and time and time again
I watch and wait and wonder when
Your message will arrive

'Cos though you're just a space cadet
When you receive this S.O.S.
Please transmit coordinates
So our worlds can collide

Bridge 1

Spacegirl, are you lonely?
Spacegirl, are you cold?
Spacegirl, won't you take me to your home?

Chorus

Dear Spacegirl [Spacegirl]
Dear Spacegirl

Verse 2

A million miles away from me
Orbiting Parthenope
Turn on your telepathy
And I'm sure you'll share this thrill

'Cos though you're warping worlds away
And if you came you couldn't stay
I know that you'll descend one day
The day my world stands still

Bridge 2

Spacegirl, aren't you lonely?
Spacegirl, aren't you cold?
Spacegirl, please don't leave me here alone

Chorus

Dear Spacegirl [Spacegirl] [Dear Spacegirl]
Dear Spacegirl

Verse 3

That day we'll dance round Saturn's rings
Waltzing while the spheres sing
Wheeling like two birds on wing
From Titan to Telesto

Solo

Verse 4

If I could send a satellite
To look for you at the speed of light
Maybe you'd be here tonight
Venus meeting Mars

But one day soon you'll intercept
My signal and then you'll correct
Your course and then you'll come collect
And take me to the stars

Bridge 3

Spacegirl, aren't you lonely?
Spacegirl, aren't you cold?
Spacegirl, please don't leave me here alone

Chorus

Dear Spacegirl [Dear Spacegirl] [Spacegirl] [Dear Spacegirl]
Dear Spacegirl

Outro

[Playing in the Pleiades
Beaming down to Ganymede
Turn on your telemetry
And take me to the stars]

[Spacegirl]
[Spacegirl]

Take me to the stars
Take me to the stars
